		<description>Thanks photolarry :)  It was a helpful quick read.  I am a scientist by trade (we&#039;re friends on brightkite) and have a passing interest in photography.  The optics and relationships all make plenty of sense to me.  I&#039;ve just never really gotten around to looking at what the photo jargon means and correlating that with the optics equations.  But I have noticed the phenomenon you&#039;re explaining - the impossibility of getting shallow DOF without using macro mode on an object close to the lense with a faraway background - in a point-and-shoot.
